How to install Adobe Illustrator extensions (Mac and Windows)

Adobe Illustrator extensions add tools directly into the application as docked panels. Once installed, they appear under Window > Extensions and stay open while you work.

This guide covers both installation methods using GridMe, the logo grid extension, as the example. The steps apply to any CEP extension you want to install.

Two ways to install Illustrator extensions

There are two reliable ways to install a CEP extension for Illustrator.

Adobe Exchange is Adobe's own marketplace. You find the extension there, connect your Creative Cloud account, and it installs automatically. No file management required.

Manual install with ZXP Installer is the method for extensions you downloaded directly from the developer. You download the .zxp file, point ZXP Installer at it, and it handles the rest.

Both methods work on Illustrator 2021 through 2026, macOS and Windows. Both produce the same result: a panel that appears under Window > Extensions the next time you open Illustrator.

Method 1: Adobe Exchange (easiest)

Adobe Exchange is the simplest way to install extensions because Creative Cloud manages the install for you. GridMe is listed on Adobe Exchange, so you can install it without touching any files.

Step by step for Exchange install

1. Go to the Adobe Exchange website and search for GridMe (or the extension you want to install).
2. Sign in with your Adobe account if you are not already signed in.
3. Click the Free or Get button on the listing page.
4. Adobe Exchange connects to your Creative Cloud and starts the install.
5. Open or restart Illustrator.
6. Go to Window > Extensions > GridMe to open the panel.

That is the entire process. If Illustrator was already open during step 4, quit and reopen it for the extension to appear in the menu.

Method 2: Manual install with ZXP Installer

If you downloaded the extension file directly from the developer, you will have a .zxp file. ZXP Installer is a free application from aescripts.com that reads this file and places it in the right location on your computer.

Step by step for ZXP install

1. Download ZXP Installer from aescripts.com/zxpinstaller. Install and open it.
2. Drag your .zxp file onto the ZXP Installer window, or click the file icon and browse to it.
3. Wait for the green confirmation message that says the install succeeded.
4. Quit Illustrator completely if it is open.
5. Reopen Illustrator.
6. Go to Window > Extensions > GridMe to open the panel.

You do not need to put the .zxp file in any specific folder before doing this. Download it anywhere and hand it to ZXP Installer.

What to do if macOS blocks the file

macOS sometimes quarantines downloaded files. If you see a message that says the file cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer:

1. Open System Settings and go to Privacy and Security.
2. Scroll down to the Security section.
3. You will see a message referencing the blocked file. Click Open Anyway.
4. Enter your Mac password when prompted.
5. Go back to ZXP Installer and retry the install.

The signed GridMe installer from gridme.in is safe. The quarantine message appears because macOS checks all downloaded files, not because something is wrong with the file itself.

What to do if Windows shows a security warning

Windows SmartScreen may show a blue dialog that says "Windows protected your PC." This appears for signed software that has not yet accumulated a reputation score with Microsoft. It does not mean the file is malicious.

1. Click More info on the SmartScreen dialog.
2. Click Run anyway.
3. Continue with the ZXP Installer steps above.

Opening your extension after install

After installing by either method, open Illustrator and go to Window > Extensions > GridMe.

If you do not see it in the menu:

• Make sure you fully quit and reopened Illustrator after the install. Closing a document is not enough.
• On macOS, confirm that ZXP Installer showed a success message before you restarted.
• On Windows, try running ZXP Installer as administrator if the install appeared to complete but nothing shows up.

For GridMe specifically, the first time you open the panel it will prompt you to start your 7-day Pro trial or enter a license key. You do not need a key to use the free Base grids. Seven grid types are free with no time limit.

Troubleshooting common install problems

Extension does not appear in Window > Extensions after restarting Illustrator

The most common cause is that Illustrator was not fully quit before or during the install. Use Cmd+Q on Mac or File > Exit on Windows to quit completely, then reopen.

ZXP Installer says the file is corrupt

The download is likely incomplete. Download the file again and retry. If the problem persists, try a different browser.

Panel opens but shows a blank screen

This usually means Illustrator's CEP cache needs clearing. On Mac, delete the folder at ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP. On Windows, delete C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CEP. Restart Illustrator after.

The extension installed but disappeared after an Illustrator update

Some major Illustrator updates reset which extensions are enabled. Reinstalling through ZXP Installer or Adobe Exchange fixes this. GridMe supports Illustrator 2021 through 2026, so it continues working on current releases.

Can I install the same extension on more than one computer?
